How to Prevent Clogged Drains
It seems like drain clogs pop up at the worst times, like during a holiday party when you have a house full of guests. Although you can’t prevent every drain clog, there are steps you can take to avoid most of them. Here are some tips to keep your drains flowing freely.
Install a Lint Catcher on Your Washing Machine Hose
Consider yourself lucky if your washing machine drain hasn’t clogged yet because lint, bits of fabric, tissue, and other debris often get into your washer’s drain hose and eventually wind up clogging up your drain. If you use an inexpensive lint trapper, you can avoid most washing machine drain clogs.
Use Bacteria
Organic matter is the source of many drain clogs. Whether it’s hair, grease, food, or something else, you can rest assured that no matter how diligent you are, some of this debris winds up in your drains. To prevent this matter from building up and causing a clog, use a bacterial drain cleaner to break down organic matter and prevent clogs.
Put Grease in the Trash
Grease is one of the worst substances you can pour down your drains. Warm grease cools inside your pipes, thickens, and eventually forms a clog. To make matters worse, other bits of debris like food get caught up in the greasy clog making the situation worse. So, instead of pouring grease down the drain, collect it into an old coffee can or another container to put it in the trash. Or better yet, save the grease for use in cooking later.
Use Drain Filters
In the bathroom, hair and soap combine to create stubborn clogs that often require a drain snake to clear out. You can avoid these kinds of clogs by installing a metal mesh screen over your drain to stop hair from going in. You may also find products like bathtub drain stoppers that replace the original stopper and prevent hair and other debris from going down the drain.
Be Mindful About What You Flush
Too many Pinole residents use their toilets as trash cans and dump all kinds of personal care products down the drain. After all, the hole looks pretty big, and everything seems to go down, okay? So, what’s the harm? Well, just because you flush something down the toilet doesn’t mean it makes it to the main sewer; often, this debris gets caught somewhere in your plumbing and forms the base of a clog. The key is to flush only toilet paper and human waste down the toilet –– for everything else, throw it into the trash.

Signs of a Failing Water Heater
Nothing lasts forever, and that includes your water heater. With proper care and maintenance, the average water heater can last up to 15 years, but here are signs you shouldn’t ignore that point to a water heater that’s on its last legs.
- No Hot Water: If your showers are only lukewarm when they used to be hot, it’s a sign that your water heater is failing. As water minerals build up in the tank over time, they create a barrier between the burner and the water, which means you get less hot water than you’re used to.
- Popping or Rumbling Noises: Another symptom of a failing water heater is if you hear strange sounds coming from the tank, such as popping or rumbling. These noises are also caused by sediment buildup, which creates air pockets that boil along with the water in the tank.
- Cloudy Water: If you notice that your water is murky or rust-colored, or if it has a metallic odor or taste, it’s probably because your water heater is failing. As mineral deposits build up, it can cause the water to come out cloudy. Also, metal flaking off from the inside of the tank get into your water, making it smell or taste metallic.
- Water Leaks: Any time you see water leaking around the base of your water tank, it means you have a severe problem, and best call a professional ASAP before the tank gives way and floods your room.
